The notion of ‘affordances’ provides a context in which to think more carefully about the possibility of technological determinism. James Gibson coined affordance theory in 1979, in his book, The Ecological Approach to Visual Perception. He theorised a world of many objects, devices and tools, which can be used by people to get things done, to make life easier, to perform tasks and so on, but only so long as the user perceives the object in that way. Thus direct perception is critical. So, objects represent affordances if we recognise them as such, and have use for them.

The research focus here was on the delivery of BYOD in Years 9 and 10, thus the principal’s support was required as the invitation would be delivered to a particular group of teachers rather than the whole staff, as was the case at Schools A1, A2 and B1.
